WHAT IS A CLINICAL TRIAL?

A clinical trial is a scientific study that involves people.  A clinical trial investigates whether a medicine is safe and effective for the treatment of a disease or medical condition. They are generally conducted by pharmaceutical companies in collaboration with independent investigators (doctors).

All our studies are approved by the Ministry of Health and the NZ Ethics Committee.

  • A Phase I trial: The trial focuses on the safety of the medicine.
  • Phase II: Focuses mostly on the effectiveness of the study medicine in treating the intended disease
  • Phase III: In this phase the focus is on safety, effectiveness and determining the right dose to treat the disease.
WHAT DOES PARTICIPATION IN A CLINICAL STUDY INVOLVE?

Before agreeing to participate in the trial, participants need to read the participant information sheet and understand what participation in the trial will involve.

The Investigator will answer any questions necessary at any time of the study.

If you decide to take part in the study, you will be asked to sign a consent form.

By signing the Consent Form study participants are agreeing to participate in the study.

Participation in clinical trials is voluntary; you can withdraw from the study at any time

It is important that study participants attend all the clinic visits as prescribed by the study staff.

CCST cannot guarantee your place in a study until you are admitted and dosed.

WILL I BE PAID FOR TAKING PART?

For healthy volunteer studies and many disease specific studies you will be reimbursed for your time and inconvenience at the end of the study. Full payment is conditional on completing the study and complying with the restrictions.

If you are receiving a benefit or allowance from a government agency, you may wish to discuss this with your case manager prior to taking part. The payment advice you receive will state that you were paid from the admission visit until the final follow-up visit.  CCST staff are not qualified to provide advice on tax issues.

Once you have been accepted onto a study you will be offered taxis or a travel allowance to get to and from your visits.

There is no payment or travel allowance for screening visits.
